Welcome back

This is our last half term in Year 1 as we are getting ready to move into Year 2.

We have had an exciting day today as we found out an alien had crash landed in our school garden. He had sent us a letter to say he was lost in the school somewhere. We have helped him find his 13 jewels but we still can't find him!

Week 6

We had a great butterfly party this afternoon to set our butterflies free into our garden.

Today we came back in from lunch to find a new friend---- a butterfly.

Parent Letter Summer 1

Welcome back to your last term in year 1!

This half term we will looking at our local heroes in history and plants and birds in science.

We are hoping to visit Stanley park this half term and research different trees and plants.

Week 3 -

This week the children have been continuing to learn about stories from other cultures with a focus on Handa's Surprise and Handa's Hen.

In Mathematics, we have been learning more about division - sharing and grouping objects.

On Friday for R.E we thought about how Spring Time is different from Winter. We looked for clues in our playground and drew pictures for our R.E books.

HANDA'S SURPRISE - Picture Book- Animation

Handa puts seven delicious fruits in a basket to take to her friend, Akeyo. But as she walks, carrying the basket on her head, various creatures steal her fruits. A monkey takes the banana, an ostrich the guava, a zebra the orange, an elephant the mango, a giraffe the pineapple, an antelope the avocado and a parrot the passion fruit.

Week 2

What a wonderful week! We had an exciting visit to Chester zoo on Thursday and got to see some meerkats! It was cold and wet but we loved every minute of it! On Friday we wrote a recount of our visit using past tense words.

We have also been problem solvers this week in maths as we had to solve difficult multiplication problems.

Week 1

It has been a busy week introducing lots of new topics.

In English we have been reading Handa's surprise and tasted lots of different fruits.

In Maths we have been learning about repeated addition and arrays in multiplication.

We have started looking at meerkats and we read Meerkat Mail. We then produced our own post card linked to Meerkat Mail.

We also had a lovely visit to our nursery to see the baby chicks that they have and are looking after.

Welcome back to Spring Term 2

Our Learning Challenge question is "Why cant meerkats live in the north pole?" We are investigating where they live, what they look like and what other animals might live in the north pole.

In science we are learning how to look after our pets and we will make a pet house!

E Safety

This week was safer internet day and we had a great lesson about how to keep ourselves safe on the internet. Use the link bellow to look for some more ideas.

Remember - Before you click, click, click, You must think, think, think and TELL SOMEONE.

Week 6

We have had an exciting week to end our half term. We have been to the Museum of Liverpool and had a good look at lots of old and new toys. We even got to have a play with them but we had to be very careful as lots of the toys are delicate.

In science we carried out an investigation to see which material and equipment would be the strongest as Rapunzel's tower.

In English we have written our own version of Rapunzel and in Maths we have been learning about doubling and halving numbers.

We have loved learning about things that happened in the past and how toys are made.

Roll on next half term as we will be learning about Meerkats and going to visit them in Chester Zoo

Week 5 - DT week.

We have had a week of Learning Challenge, focusing on Design Technology (DT). The children's task was to design, make and evaluate a moving toy. We decided on a 'roly poly' and the children put a lot of effort into their work. I hope they had fun playing with their fantastic toys at home!

For Mathematics this week we have focused on double numbers - it would be useful for the children to complete their homework which is based on this.

The children had a visit to the computer room today and they were being 'storytellers'. The children had a go at re-telling the story of Rapunzel using headphones with a microphone...although we had a few technical problems with headphones!!!!

See our fantastic work by looking through our photographs from this week.

Week 4 -

The children have had a really busy week this week - its has gone in the blink of an eye!

The children have been learning to count in 2's, 10's and 5's this week in Mathematics and they have been using practical resources to help them count in these groups.

For English we have been learning about 'Fairy Tales'. We started with Rapunzel and finished the week off learning about the story of Snow White.

In Learning Challenge we asked the children to bring in their own toy so that we could compare them to old toys. We took lots of photos for you to see - enjoy!

Week 3 -

This week in Science, 1JH have been investigating materials further by looking at their properties.

For Learning Challenge, in History we learnt about the inventor Alexander Graham Bell who invested the first telephone. We watched a video about his life and his exciting journey!

The children published their instructions in English and in Mathematics, we were continuing with addition and subtraction, but including measure and money in our calculations. Well done for all your hard work this week!!!

Week 2 - This week 1JH have been learning about old and new toys in History. A big thank you to all the children who did some research at home! We used this information in class to compare old toys to new ones. We linked this to Science, when we sorted a variety of materials into groups of wood, plastic, metal and glass. In Mathematics, we have been using our number facts to 20 to work out subtraction word problems - the children did a super job!!

For English we have been learning about 'instructions'.

On Friday, the children had a go at following instructions to make a cheese and ham wrap.

For homework this weekend, we have asked the children if they could make some toast and write some instructions for it.

See photos below from our fun filled week!

Spring One Parent Letter

Week 1  We have had a busy first week back and the children have amazed me with everything that they have remembered from before the Christmas break!

We have been doing 'missing number' calculations in Mathematics and writing about our Christmas news in English, using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.

For Science, we have been looking at different materials, the children eagerly went on a materials hunt around school. The children also started dance lessons in P.E this week - they thoroughly enjoyed learning a 'Bollywood' dance.

See photos below!

Welcome back - Spring Term

We had lots of fun talking about our Christmas holidays today and catching up with friends.

A few reminders:

  •   Book bags must be brought into school each day.
  •   Children must have P.E kits, fully named with tracksuit bottoms for outdoor P.E.
  •   Named water bottles may be brought into school each day with fresh water.
  •   If anyone needs a Bug Club login reminder - let me know.

Why does it get darker earlier in Winter?

The children have been investigating night and day and different light sources for Science. The children brought in their own torches from home and we investigated shadows. When we eventually get some sunshine, we will go outdoors to make shadows with the sun and our bodies.

This week the children have brought home their updated BugClub login details. If you haven't yet logged in with your child-please do!! Your child has a variety of books to choose from. They can read the book or a voice will read to them. Reading as often as possible will give the children lots of opportunity to develop their reading skills.
