WOW Launch: Viking Archaeological Dig
Our question this term is, 'Were the Vikings always victorious and vicious?' For our WOW launch, we took part in an archaeological dig. We dug up different artefacts and thought about what we thought they were and what they were used for in the Viking times. It was so interesting!
WOW Launch: What will I look like in 50 years?
Our science topic this term is Animals and Humans. Our question is, 'What will I be like when I am as old as my grandparents?' For our WOW launch, we used an app on the iPad to age ourselves. A lot of us were shocked at how many wrinkles we now had, and how grey our hair was. It was hilarious, and there were many tears of laughter. Take a look at these pictures!!
We have been doing lots of lessons on number and place value in class this term. Last week, we used Numicon to help with our understanding of the place value of decimals. The board represented the number 1, and then the blue shapes were a tenth and all the other shapes were hundredths. We used this idea to create different decimals. It was really fun!
This term Year 5 are very lucky because they get to have dance lessons with Abbie every Friday. They have been creating and practicing a routine to the Jackson Five. Don't blame it on the Boogie!!!!!
We were very lucky this week in Year 5 because we had a visit from Olaf Grimson, a Viking who told us many tales about his life. We were lucky enough to see lots of different artefacts and hear all about his travels, all the way from Norway. We even got to recreate a battle with the Anglo Saxons. We had a great day and learned lots about the vicious Vikings! Have a look at our pictures to see what we got up to.
International Day of Languages
On Friday, we all dressed up in brightly coloured clothes ti celebrate International day of languages. In Year 5, we were Mexico. We tried lots of different food from Mexico, including, chicken fajita wraps, tacos, guacamole, salsa and refried beans. We really enjoyed the food... it disappeared very quickly!
In the afternoon, we also took part in some workshops, including dance and drumming. It was a really fun day!
Today, the whole school had a small taster session with a visitor with some fantastic drums. The children followed instructions and beats really well and even created their own sounds with the drums, their hands and even their feet. They had lots of fun!
Can we recreate a Viking meal?
Today, we looked at and tasted different Viking meals. For dagmal (breakfast) we had prridge with dried fruits and for nattmal (dinner), we had stew with oatcakes. The children really enjoyed it - especially the stew!
This term, Year 5 have been very busy being game developers. We have used Scratch to programme our own Viking games. We've learned all about programming and have created a game which includes a Viking long ship travelling to invade Britain.
This week, Year 5 helped our school to celebrate Harvest. We joined in our whole school collective worship and helped to teach others about the importance of sharing and giving thanks for the things we have at this time of year.
Can we create a Viking long boat from a range of materials?
Yes we can!
This week, Year 5 have designed and made Viking long boats during our DT lessons. We collected materials which would help our long boats to float and even designed and made shields and sails to add to them. After we had built our boats we had to test them to see if they would float.
Take a look at our photos to see what happened next...
As you know, this half term Year 5 were set the challenge of reading at home. The children ticked off how many times they read at home and when they reached 30 times, they received a reading prize.
This half term, 5 children completed the challenge. Well done, Kemi, Amy, Malak, Diana and Retaj!

WOW Launch: Chester Zoo Islands Visit
As our WOW launch for the new topic of rainforests, we visited Chester Zoo. We went on a boat trip around the new Sumatran islands, looking at all the different islands. It was brilliant. Then, we walked around all the other parts of the Zoo, looking at all the animals and their habitats. The best part was the tropical realm world, where we saw the different layers of the rainforest and the different animals and plants that would live in each part. It was a great day!
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
In Year 5 we have been very busy learning songs for our Christmas play and we are all looking forward to performing for our parents. The decorations are up and we are all getting very excited. Watch this space for what we've been getting up to...
