Geography

How Geography is taught at Arnot St Mary

Our Geography Curriculum at Arnot St Mary is an enquiry led subject which allows pupils to understand and explore the ‘what’, the ‘where’ and the ‘how’ of our diverse world. We aim to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Our curriculum is designed to impart knowledge about a varying range of places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

At Arnot St Mary we enable our children to become knowledge and vocabulary rich geographers secure in the understanding of who they are and where they come from, and confident in looking to where they will go next.

As children progress through the Geography Curriculum, explicit links and connections are made to support pupils to continually build upon the knowledge and skills they have accumulated in previous year groups as well as providing deeper understanding of other connected curriculum areas.

At Arnot St Mary, children’s discovery of the world around them and their awareness of place begins in the Early Years Foundation Stage where children begin to recognise similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things. They begin to explain why some things occur and talk about changes that occur in the world around them.

Our KS1 and KS2 Geography Curriculum is carefully mapped so that all pupils are equipped with a deep knowledge of locations, places and geographical landscapes across the world alongside an understanding of the conditions, processes and interactions that explain features, distribution patterns and changes over time and space. Pupils are also provided with opportunities to develop and apply their geographical skills in map reading and observing, collecting, analysing, evaluating and communicating geographical information

Enrichment in Geography

In order to support our children’s understanding of the subject of geography, we supplement our units with enrichment activities including fieldwork trips, engaging workshops, immersive experience days, videos and resources such as quality maps and atlases to ensure that our pupils are knowing more and remembering more about the subject of geography.
