I spent today on County Road, talking to families, business owners, workers and visiting local schools and Spellow Library. Tomorrow, most businesses will close their shutters. Not because they want to, but because they are frightened of what the day might bring due to the planned anti-migrant protest. The people I met today have not forgotten what happened in 2024. They remember shops being looted. They remember Spellow Library being burned. They remember emergency service workers being attacked for doing their jobs. And they are frightened that it could happen again. What struck me most about today was hearing about the effect this is having on children. Following the horrifying scenes in Belfast, children are asking their parents: "Are they going to burn our house down tomorrow?" No child should be carrying that fear. I am in contact with the Home Secretary, Downing Street, local police and the city council. This community is being heard at the highest level of government. I also support the request made by the Leader of Liverpool City Council to the Home Secretary for an urgent review of the powers available to protect communities. Anyone considering travelling to County Road tomorrow to intimidate residents, target communities or cause disorder should stay away. Those who bring violence and criminality to these streets will feel the full force of the law. County Road faces real challenges. People are worried about the cost of living, housing, crime and the future for their children. Those concerns are felt by people of every background who call this place home. Communities are not strengthened by setting neighbour against neighbour. We make things better by coming together, looking out for one another and tackling problems side by side.
